Jimmy Kimmel hosted the Academy Awards for the second year running and kicked off the presentation ceremony with a monologue poked fun at Harvey Weinstein and Mike Pence while paying homage to #MeToo and Time's Up. He started off by saying that the Oscar trophy was Hollywood’s ‘most beloved and respected man’ because ‘he keeps his hands where you can see them, never says a rude word and, most importantly, he has no penis.’ Below are some of the most memorable lines from Kimmel's monologue and other quotes from Oscar 2018. Jimmy Kimmel: “Here's how clueless Hollywood is about women: We made a movie called What Women Want, and it starred Mel Gibson.” Frances McDormand: “If I fall over during my speech, someone should pick me up because I’ve got some things to say.” She went on to a

Two years in a row have brought unexpected gifts from Indian cinema for the national masochists club. Last year we heard of dybbuk and ruchim from Jewish folklore via the Mollywood production Ezra. 2017 also gave us the Tamil venture Aval (simultaneously made by the same director in Hindi as The House Next Door), which tapped into our anxieties about what lies outside our windows in the still of the night. Now, in the first quarter of 2018, has come the discovery of ifrit and peri from Middle Eastern mythology courtesy Bollywood. I learnt about these beings – the former demonic, the latter more ambiguous, says the Goddess Google – as I sat cowering in my seat with my scarf covering my mouth and nose and inching towards my eyes throughout the press preview of the film Pari: Not A Fairyta

Is there an Ambedkar Touch to Rajinikanth’s Kaala Teaser?

Movie Trailers
Chennai: Kaala or black is the colour of the proletariat, so says the teaser of Rajinikanth's latest movie Kaala. In Kabali, Rajinikanth was a steely Malaysian people's leader trying to piece together his family torn-apart by ethnic strike, but in Kaala the 67-year-old is a true-blue working class man taking on hegemonistic forces looking to rule over the lowly labour classes. They are white, he is black. The teaser is a reference to black and white. In the opening of the teaser, the antagonist, Nana Patekar, dressed in white, asks: "What sort of a name is Kaala?" Sample, Rajinikanth's answer: "Uzhaippin vannam Karuppe (The colour of the working class is black)." There is an Amdebkar touch as well in the teaser. "Katravai Patravai," Says Rajinikanth which means Educate, Agitate and ...

Long kryptonite to superheroes, the Oscars begin to relent

Aside from the posthumous Oscar for Heath Ledger ("The Dark Knight") and best animated film for "The Incredibles," no superhero film has ever penetrated the top categories of the Academy Awards. Though regular honorees for their bombastic visual effects or thunderous, wall-to-wall sound, comic-book movies have been denied the upper reaches of achievement. Marvel Studios — one of the most dominant pop-culture juggernauts the movies have ever seen — hasn't won a single Academy Award. But there are signs that the deep freeze for superheroes is thawing. "Logan," James Mangold's acclaimed final chapter of Wolverine, the long-clawed "X-Men" character played by Hugh Jackman, is nominated for best adapted screenplay at Sunday's awards. The nod, which Mangold shares with co-writers Michael Gree

Collecting snowflakes in her palms outside her eco-friendly villa nestled in an organic farm in Manali on a cold December evening. For the 30-year-old star, it was another personal milestone—her farm has been nearly two years in the making. Turns out, the year was just as significant for her personally as it was for her fiery public persona, which has been a tabloid and front page staple. In September, she started work on what she acknowledges as the most challenging film of her life, Manikarnika: The Queen Of Jhansi, in which she plays Rani Lakshmibai. It’s a historical figure Ranaut looked up to during her growing years. Determined to do justice to the role, the actor per

https://youtu.be/D59v74k5flU Australian YouTuber Primitive Technology just posted a video, currently trending at the number one spot, showing him create mud bricks from scratch. First, we see him make a brick mold from wood, with the aim of making bricks measuring 25 x 12.5 x 7.5 cm. “A log was split, and mortise and tenon joints were carved using a stone chisel and sharp rocks. The mold was lashed together with cane to prevent it from coming apart when used,” he writes in the video description. Next, he made a mixture of palm fiber as a base for the bricks. This was then slapped into the mold to be shaped and then taken to the drying area, where he made up to 140 bricks. Once dry, the bricks were placed in a monolithic kiln he built himself, where they were fired for 3 hours until suff
